Identifying what coaching is seems to be a difficult task. Many institutions that associate or train coaches use their own definitions of coaching, which often differ significantly. Besides, coaching today includes activities that are not. Trainings, workshops, conferences, motivational speeches or some management methods may contain elements of coaching, although they have different assumptions and serve different purposes. In this article I will try to describe what coaching is as a service of a professional coach. Below I will present the definitions used in various organizations, which I referred to when explaining what coaching is.
“Coaching is an interactive process that helps individuals or organizations to accelerate their pace of development and improve their performance. A coach works with clients in areas related to business, career development, finance, health and interpersonal relations. Thanks to coaching, clients set more specific goals, optimize their activities, make more accurate decisions and use their natural skills more fully.” – Definition of the International Coach Federation

I admit that none of these definitions was complete for me. I kept looking until I finally found her a few weeks ago while reading the excellent book “Manager as a coach” by Jenny Rogers:
“Coaching is the art of making it easier for another person to learn, develop and act. It increases self-awareness and allows you to see the choices made. Thanks to coaching, people find their own solutions, develop skills and change their attitudes and behavior. The purpose of coaching is to bridge the gap between potential and action.”
Expanding this definition a bit, the following properties of coaching can be emphasized. It:
An important feature of coaching, which distinguishes it from other forms of working with the client (e.g. training, therapy, mentoring, management, etc.) is the nature of the relationship between the coach and the client. In coaching, this relationship is partnerships and assumes that partners are equal.
The essence of coaching is the assumption that the client is inherently creative and has the knowledge and skills sufficient to solve problems and achieve set goals. The role of the coach is to extract these skills and resources and to facilitate the discovery of the best solutions and strategies. It does this mainly through conversation, asking questions, feedback from the observer’s perspective and appropriately selected coaching tasks.
The coaching method assumes work based on a specific goal. The coach helps the client define this goal so that he can achieve it and at the same time bring the value to which he will be following. Then the coach accompanies the client on the way to the goal, helps to monitor the progress and supports when difficulties arise.
